Government and Tata Chemicals form a joint committee on Magadi, days after Ruto told the firm to go.
The government and Tata Chemicals have agreed to set up a joint technical committee to sort out the standoff at Lake Magadi, Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho said on Tuesday.
The committee brings together the Principal Secretary for Mining and the chief executive of Tata Chemicals Magadi. It will review the dispute and report back to the Cabinet Secretary.
Five things are on its list: adding value to the mineral locally, community benefits and royalty payments, land, opening the area up to other minerals, and unfinished business with the Kajiado County Government.
The Ministry suspended the company's operations on 28 July, citing gaps in value addition, royalty reconciliation, community development, employment and environmental compliance. That suspension has not been lifted.
On 3 September President William Ruto publicly told the company to leave, saying local communities had not benefited enough. Soda ash has been mined at Magadi since 1911.
The matter is also in court. Tata Chemicals is due before the High Court on 18 November.
