Jacob Krop and Cornelius Kemboi will be Kenya’s first athletes in action at the new World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary, when they line up in the men’s 5,000m final on Friday night.

The three-day event runs from September 11 to 13 at the National Athletics Centre. It is the first edition of the championship, which brings together 381 athletes from 65 countries. The 5,000m has no heats and goes straight to a final. Every event winner takes home $150,000 (about Sh19.4 million) and a trophy instead of a medal, from a total prize pot of $10 million.

A tough field

Krop, the 2022 world silver medallist over 5,000m, and Kemboi face Norway’s Olympic 5,000m champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen, American Olympic 1,500m champion Cole Hocker, USA’s Parker Wolfe and Ethiopia’s Addisu Yihune and Biniam Mehary.

Earlier in the evening, national 400m record holder Mercy Oketch runs in the women’s 400m semi-finals, hoping to reach Saturday’s final.

The rest of Team Kenya

Kenya’s squad also includes Emmanuel Wanyonyi in the 800m, Timothy Cheruiyot and Phanuel Koech in the men’s 1,500m, Dorcus Ewoi in the women’s 1,500m, javelin thrower Julius Yego and a mixed 4x400m relay team.
