Nurses in public hospitals have called off the strike that began on July 29, after their union signed a return-to-work deal with the Council of Governors on Wednesday. Nurses were told to report back within a day.

Under the deal, nurses’ risk allowance goes up to Sh8,000 and their uniform allowance rises by Sh5,000, with another review planned for 2027. Nurses hired under the Universal Health Coverage programme are to be moved onto permanent and pensionable terms at SRC rates from July 1, 2026. Nurses dismissed by Kisii County are to be reinstated, and career guidelines for nurses are due within 45 days.

The bigger dispute

At the centre of the strike was a 2017 collective bargaining agreement that has still not been fully put in place, with the government citing budget limits. The deal was signed by Council of Governors chair Ahmed Abdullahi, CoG health committee chair and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, and union secretary general Seth Panyako.

“Going forward, we should resolve issues without going on strike,” Panyako said.

The strike left public hospitals badly stretched. Two days before the deal, the doctors’ union had given the government seven days to end the standoff or face a doctors’ strike, saying they could no longer carry the extra workload.
