What a donation of supplies does
Outreach days matter to households that ration health spending. A free consultation, a blood pressure or blood sugar check, deworming, family planning supplies and a course of basic drugs remove a cost that many families would otherwise skip entirely.
The limitation is built into the model. A donation is stock, and stock runs out. Outreach finds conditions that need continuous treatment, and diabetes, hypertension, asthma and epilepsy cannot be managed by a one day camp.
The referral question
The test of any medical outreach is what happens on day two. Is there a named facility that takes referrals, is there a record the patient keeps, and can a patient without money continue the treatment that was started. Where those links are missing, a camp can leave people with a diagnosis and no path.
Faith based providers do a large share of primary care in Nairobi’s settlements, and the best of them keep files, refer upwards and follow up.
The Kibra angle
KNN keeps a working directory of where to get treatment in and around Kibra, including which facilities are open at night, which handle maternity, and which accept the national health insurance cover. Outreach events are worth attending, and they are not a substitute for registering with a facility that will still be there next month.
If your household is not registered for the national scheme, that remains the single most useful health admin task to complete.
What we are watching
How many people were seen, what the supplies covered, and whether patients who need continuing treatment were referred to a facility that can provide it.
