‘Very painful’: Joe Biden’s cancer has spread, son Hunter says.
Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, says his father's prostate cancer has "metastasised into his bones and further".
Background
Prostate cancer that has spread to the bones is described as metastatic, meaning it is no longer confined to the prostate. It is generally managed as a long-term condition rather than cured, using hormone therapy, radiotherapy and newer drug combinations, and many people live with it for years. Public figures who disclose a diagnosis of this kind usually release updates through family members, which is why the detail tends to arrive in fragments rather than in a single clinical statement.
Why it matters here
Prostate cancer is among the most commonly diagnosed cancers in Kenyan men, and it is too often found late. The reasons are practical rather than mysterious: screening is not routine, a PSA test costs money, and the early stage of the disease produces few symptoms that would push a man towards a clinic. For men in Kibra and similar neighbourhoods the barrier is usually the cost and time of the first consultation, not a refusal to be tested. Men over 50, and over 45 where there is a family history, are generally advised to discuss screening with a clinician.
What to watch next
Whether the family issues further updates, and whether the case prompts renewed attention to screening guidance and its cost.
