Germany has formally blamed Russia for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport and ordered the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian House cultural centre in Berlin.

On 4 August 2026, a drone carrying an explosive device was found near a Ukrainian Antonov Airlines cargo aircraft at the airport, a major logistics hub for Western support to Ukraine, and was defused by a bomb-disposal robot. Al Jazeera reports a second drone collided with an aircraft near the facility.

“Taken together, the police investigations, the pattern and intelligence findings prove a Russian responsibility,” Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said on Tuesday, 1 September. He said the device showed a high degree of technical expertise but was carried out by low-level agents on behalf of Russian state entities.

Measures and reaction

Germany summoned Russia’s ambassador and said the Bonn consulate must close by 18 September. Berlin will also push for more EU sanctions on Russians involved in hybrid attacks, tighter entry controls and more pressure on Russia’s “shadow fleet” of tankers. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Russia had deliberately inflicted “significant damage” on relations.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova called the allegations “far-fetched and contrived”, and President Vladimir Putin demanded proof. Poland, Italy, the UK, Sweden and the Czech Republic backed Germany, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte expressed “full solidarity”.

The Associated Press has logged roughly 200 sabotage and other malign incidents in Europe attributed to Russia since 2022. The announcement comes days before state elections in Saxony-Anhalt on 6 September.
