The Social Health Authority (SHA) has given hospitals and clinics 14 more days to sign new contracts, moving the deadline from 30 September to 14 October.

This changes what KNN reported on Tuesday, when SHA said only facilities with a new contract could treat SHA members from 1 October.

What SHA has said

  • During the 14 days, facilities keep working under their old contracts, but only if they accept, sign and return the extension agreement within three days.
  • When the 14 days end, the old contracts lapse. SHA says no further extension will be granted.
  • SHA will hold contracting clinics in every county from Monday, 5 October, to help facilities finish signing up. Schedules will be posted on the SHA website.
  • Facilities that do not accept the extension must work with SHA county managers to move their patients to contracted facilities.
  • 10,006 providers are at different stages of signing up for the 2026 to 2029 contracts.

The notice was signed by SHA chief executive Dr Mercy Mwangangi. Counties have raised concerns too: the Council of Governors says county hospitals are being treated like private providers, and has asked SHA to respond by 12 October.

What it means for you

  • Your usual hospital or clinic can still treat you on SHA until 14 October, if it has signed the extension. Ask at the front desk before you are treated.
  • Check whether a facility is contracted on the SHA website or the Afya Yangu portal (afyayangu.go.ke).
  • SHA’s toll-free line is 0800 720 601.
  • After 14 October, a facility without a new contract cannot bill SHA for your care.
