University lecturers say they will strike from Friday too, as talks on their pay deal reach a critical stage.
Lecturers at Kenya's public universities plan to go on strike from Friday, 2 October, the same day that non-teaching staff have said they will down tools.
The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) issued a seven-day strike notice on 24 September over the 2025 to 2029 collective bargaining agreement (CBA). The union's secretary-general, Constantine Wasonga, is leading the action.
What the lecturers want
The 2025 to 2029 CBA to be put into effect.
The return-to-work formula signed on 5 November 2025 to be honoured.
Salaries to be paid from the Treasury, not from student fees.
Better medical cover, and more lecturers hired.
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission has reported that neither the Ministry of Education nor the Treasury has given written commitments on paying for the deal. On Wednesday, universities were holding last-minute talks to stop the strike, which were described as being at a critical stage.
Non-teaching staff under KUSU have called their own strike from 2 October. The last lecturers' strike lasted 49 days, from 17 September to 5 November 2025.
What it means for students
If the strike goes ahead, expect lectures, exams and other teaching to stop at public universities.
Follow only official university channels for updates. Masinde Muliro University (MMUST) has warned that a memo claiming the university would close is fake.
KNN will report on Friday whether the strike has started.
